A Star Is Born! Oh baby baby...
This project took some time to fight through, but I learned a lot and the final product, though not appearing how I was thinking, turned out not unpleasing. What did I learn? If you want to experiment with supplemental warp, use contrasting colors. If you want to play with plaids, there is no point in supplemental warp. If you want the wool to shrink, make sure it says to hand wash and dry on the package.
For this scarf I used Lion Brand’s A Star Is Born Oh Baby Organic as the ground fabric, then added some supplementary warp using LB Collection Penelope sock yarn. The idea I had was that the wool would felt giving the scarf some dimension. And let’s see how that worked out:
Spoiler. It didn’t.
But that why I am so addicted to weaving, the results are never what you expect. For a simple tool that simply goes up and down, there are countless variations in color and texture just by playing with fibers or adding some extra threads in your warp. I hope to do a tutorial on supplemental warp, it’s so easy and gives you so many options and with this, I got these cute little puffs from cutting the long warp floats.
I am going to make this little post short and sweet. Penelope has been on sale, so my guess is that’s going to be on the chopping block soon. It’s fun, it comes in great colors, it’s a nice price. However, it’s not extremely unique and there are plenty of sock weight yarns available.
The Oh Baby, however- is a new fave of mine. I hope to try some dishtowels with what I have left. I love the colors and the finished texture. I think it’s going to make fab dishtowels that are perfect for the rigid heddle: not as thick as Sugar and Cream, no need to double like 8/2 cotton. It’s kind of juuuuust riiight.
THE LOW DOWN RUN DOWN:
Oh Baby Organic Cotton:
Suggested Heddle : 12.5
Uses: Clothing, Household Items, Blankets
PROS: Nice, Modern Color Selection, decent price, soft, low tracking. works really well on a 12.5 heddle making a tightly woven cloth
CONS: Not much! It’s not as soft once laundered- but it feels like a cotton and I like that crisp cotton feeling.
Penelope Sock Yarn
Suggested Heddle 12. 5
The pros: It’s wool, it doesn’t appear to be prone to felting. You get a lot for the price, fun colors.
The cons: it’s a little rough, won’t felt if you want it to, probably going to be discountued soon.
